Seasons and Your Skincare
This part of "Skincare Information and Tips" talks about with different season's you may need to alter your skincare regimen. We also offer some great recipes that you can make from home to do at home facials. Home facials can benefit the over-all appearance and condition of your skin. See recipes for acne and oily skin, dry skin, refining pores and more!
Autumn and Winter may bring patchy or all over dryness, flakiness, irritation and allergies. Skin is vulnerable to moisture loss due to increasingly dry indoor and outdoor environments.
Hydration is vital to help your skin's natural barriers. It is important to moisturize and nourish the skin. Use gentle cleansers to prevent stripping the natural essential oils from your skin and combat winter dryness. Gentle exfoliation is helpful two or three times a week.
A helpful tip to add moisture in your home, is to place cups of water throughout your home when you are running your heater. Central heat or any room heating element dries the air of moisture, robbing your skin and nasal membranes of the moisture they need, not to mention making breathing more difficult.
Of course there are all kinds of humidifiers on the market today, but I find they can be over priced, and I don't have the time for the maintenance and cleaning or the extra storage space they require when not in use. Either method, check them often and keep them filled with water. You will be surprised how quickly it evaporates. Your skin will thank you!
Spring and Summer may bring on oily skin, combination skin, and break-outs. Using the right products can help balance and prevent extreme skin conditions.
For those with oily skin or acne, please...I repeat..please never use alcohol on your skin! Instead, use a product called "Witch Hazel". It is natural and does a great job of removing any remaining oils and dirt from the skin. It is for all skin types and if you need a quick freshen up between cleansing, blot your face with a cotton pad of Witch Hazel. Here is another beauty secret if you like to use a toner. Apple cider vinegar! It may be too strong for your skin right out of the bottle so I find mixing it with distilled water works great. You can even put it in a spray bottle for mid-day facial spritzes. Give it a try!
Healthy-Balanced Skin depends upon the production of natural moisturizing factors that help the skin attract and retain moisture. That is what a superior glycerine bar can do for you!
Whatever season it is, keeping your skin balanced through cleansing and moisturizing is one of the keys to healthy skin. Other very important factors are: proper rest, a good diet of raw vegetables and fruits, drinking plenty of water, keeping stress to a minimum, and taking quality vitamins and minerals. We hope you have the time to look around our site. There are many more skincare information and tips pages throughout this site. Below you will find more site links for specific skincare information and other topics that may interest you.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) applied topically help stimulate production of natural occuring moisturizers. AHA's also encourage the formation of new skin cells. Apples, milk, sugarcane, citrus fruits, tomatoes, grapes, strawberries and blackberries contain AHA's.
Lactic Acid appears to be best for improving moisturization, while Glycolic Acid is more effective at sloughing off dead skin cells and promoting cell renewal.

Exfoliating your skin.....How and Why?
Exfoliate: To remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
Exfoliant: A product used to exfoliate. Examples are: Pumice, loofa, apricot seed, crushed almonds.
Proper use: An exfoliating product should be used with care. Never apply too much pressure to the skin while applying. Instead, let the product glide gently over your skin using a circular motion. You do not want to scratch or irritate the skin, you only want to remove the dead skin that causes the complexion to look dull, dry and uneven. Do not use around the delicate eye area. I like to use a pumice scrub. It seems to work more evenly.
Exfoliating once or twice a week should be plenty along with your daily skin care routine. You should find that your make up will go on smoother and more evenly too.
Note: Exfoliating your legs before you shave keeps the razor from getting clogged with dead skin.... thus, giving you a much better shave.... and shinny, silky legs too!

Skincare for Dry Skin
Is water really important for your skin?
Yes, water is essential not only for keeping your skin hydrated, but your entire body relies on it. Keep reading!
Most people think that dry skin is from a lack of oil in the skin.......False- "It is a lack of moisture.... (water)"!
75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half world pop.)
In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.
One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a Washington study.
Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day ??? ?
Bathing....It's Worth Your Time!
What are the Benefits of Bathing vs. Showering:
In today's hectic times, for most of us, stress is a common factor in our lifestyles. Along with stress, there are other health issues that must be addressed through healthier eating, exercise and mental relaxation techniques.
Bathing is not only about the cleansing of the body, it is about relaxing and taking the time to treat yourself to a private get-a-way and creating a relaxing environment.
There are many ways to "create" your own private spa setting. A place to cleanse the body, mind and soul. Make it your special place and time. Your bathroom, whatever size, condition or type can be turned into anything that you need to create this environment to perform your relaxation ritual.
How about a coat of fresh paint, a tropical plant, candles, music, a bath pillow, a caddy to hold all your pampering items, aromatherapy products, bath salts, soft fluffy towels, and your favorite bath robe. For information on the effects of color, please see my article on "color therapy" in the "Guides and Education" section.
The compressive affect of immersing our bodies into the water, aids circulation, helps rid the body of toxic wastes, releases tight muscles and can even lower blood pressure.
For muscle relief and a tired body, soaking in a warm water bath with sea salts is very therapeutic. Salts are therapeutic due to compounds absorbed by the skin. The warm water stimulates circulation and our skin absorbs vitamins, minerals and trace elements that are important to our body from the salts.
Water temperature is a vital part of the bath. Water with a high mineral content stays warm longer, so the addition of salt will help maintain a warm temperature.
The ideal water temperature should be right above your body temperature. About 100 degrees.
At one time, it was thought that bathing too much would dry the skin. Not true.....hydrating the skin is vital. Water that is too hot is what would do harm. Especially for those who suffer with dry-skin!
Like sea salts, other detoxifying additives are seaweed and mud products. A mixture of salts and oils are beneficial for relaxation, rejuvenation and easing sore muscles. The addition of essential oil blends can relieve many physical ailments such as muscle tension, congestion and sinus problems, improve circulation and provide relief from stress.
When adding any additives to the bath, such as salts, oils or seaweed, soaking for at least twenty minutes will give you the fullest benefits.

Leg Shaving Tips
The art of...the pain of...SHAVING LEGS!
From time to time, I get emails for advice on different topics. One of the frequent questions is on shaving legs!
I have found through the years that it's very important to invest in the best razors you can, it does make a difference in the shaving results you will achieve.
I have also found that shaving before bedtime helps as well. Let me explain my theory. Shaving before going to bed, allows your skin to breathe while sleeping and there's no clothing rubbing and irritating your skin. When you sleep, that is the time in which your body restore's itself. I do not apply a moisturizer immediately after. I find that some oils and lotions can aggravate my skin if applied right after shaving. Especially the bikini area.
Now lets talk about preparing your skin before shaving. It is very beneficial to exfoliate and remove dead skin first. It will give you a better shave because you're not clogging up the razor with the dead skin, thus the razor performs better, you get a much closer shave and your legs will be silky smooth.
Bentonite clay is often used to make shaving soaps because it has a slippery consistency (it's almost slimy feeling) thus letting the razor glide over the skin easier. You want a good lather from a moisturizing soap, or a shaving gel or cream product. Using a good moisturizing soap has improved my skin over all. Never, never use a deodorant soap. That will cause irritation "for sure"!
While we're on the leg area......An important factor in firm skin is new cell generation and good circulation. Massaging and working the skin and muscles creates your circulation of blood flow to improve. This helps to firm the skin.
I do want to tell you that the best way to use any exfoliating product is to not try to remove years of imperfections in a week or two! Instead, use a quality product, use it consistently and do not apply hard pressure to the skin. Let the product gently glide over the skin with light pressure. As tempting as it is to get the results we want quickly, it is best to do a little at a time and not irritate or damage the skin further.
Bathing can be a lengthy process for us girls by the time we do everything. But as often as you have the time when showering or bathing, take the extra time to work the skin and the muscles in your problem areas such as the back of the thighs and upper legs. You can do this with your soap and wash cloth or loofa. Massage these areas to get the blood flowing and create better circulation.
If you have a severe dry skin problem and your skin is scaly, not just dry or "normal" dead skin, it may be in your best interest to see a Dermatologist. You could have eczema or psoriasis and need a Doctors prescription creme.
Also, a quick note on some research I did on all these new products the big cosmetic companies are coming out with.
Products such as Alpha and Beta Hydroxy.
The FDA regulates these types of products, and these companies that are marketing such promises as wrinkle and cellulite miracles, just really do not work because the companies are not allowed to use it at the strengths required. Only a Doctor of Dermatology is licensed to use at prescription strength to actually get results. So if you were thinking of investing in over the counter cellulite treatments, then your money would be better spent seeking a Dermatologist's advice and help.
Some of Nature's Gifts to Our Skin
"God has provided us with nature, and Nature has provided us with gifts for our skin"
Here are some examples:
Almonds: The almond is cultivated in Greece and throughout the Mediterranean, where it's oil is used to soothe dry skin.
Avocado: Since pre Columbian times, Latin American women have used the inside skin of an avocado because it acts as an excellent exfoliant while adding Vitamin E to your complexion. Avacado contains essential fatty acids, proteins, minerals, beta carotene and Vitamin E. It is a nourishing oil for dry skin.
See Site Links below for home facial recipes with avacado.
Cocoa Butter: Cocoa butter comes from the cocoa bean and is an age old secret of Tahitian women. It is used to counter-act the drying effects of salt air, intense sun and extreme weather conditions. It is known for its emollient properties.
Honey: For centuries Columbian women have been aware of the beatifying properties of honey. Not only does it cleanse, nourish and heal, but it's also a natural moisturizer. Honey can be used as a face mask as well. See Site Links below for home facial recipes using honey.
Jojoba Oil: Great for all skin types due to its close chemical structure to the skins own sebum (oily secretions), giving it excellent moisturizing and emulsifying properties. Contains protein, minerals, and myristic acid, an anti-inflammatory agent.
Milk: Milk nourishes and softens the skin. For centuries ancient Egyptians, among others, used milk to smooth and rejuvenate dry, lifeless skin. While all milk is good for the skin, goat milk has been proven to be most beneficial to the skin due to its natural ph level is closest to our skins ph.
Olive Oil: Good for dehydrated or irritated skin. A healthy natural oil internally and for external use. Olive oil on a cotton ball removes make up very well.
Pumice: Rock formed from the ash of Volcanic eruptions. In ancient times, many structures were built with volcanic rock.
Today, it is used in skincare to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Pumice stones are used on rough skin and callouses on the feet. In powdered or ground form, it is used in hand cleaning products such as mechanic's hand wash and gardeners and painters soap because it cleans in the crevices of the hands well to remove oil, dirt and stains.
Loofa: (loofah) A dried fibrous fruit of a plant. (A gourd actually) The "genus luffa" or a loofa gourd.
It is used as a rough sponge. The gourds grow on a vine until matured. They look like big cucumbers and can be from 12" to 18" long. The outer shell is broken and the fiborous sponge is removed and the seeds saved for planting. The sponges are washed, sometimes bleached, rinsed and then dried in the sun.
The rough texture of the gourd sponge encourages circulation of the blood flow which in turn, speeds new cell growth.
Special note on Glycerine: Glycerine penetrates the skin to help moisturize from the inside out. It softens the skin and is best for people with dry or sensitive skin.
It's chemical name is "Glycerol". It melts at 160 degrees.
Glycerin is a humectant derived from vegetable fatty acids, drawing vital moisture to the skin to ensure flexibility and resilience. It is a natural by-product.
Is it true that many commercial soap manufacturers remove the glycerin?
Yes. It is removed and used in higher priced upscale products such as lotions and creams, leaving a harsher, less moisturizing bar of soap.
(less glycerin=less priced=less quality; and you can feel the difference). The soap on the shelves of drug stores and supermarkets is not actually soap, it's detergent that irritates and/or dries out the skin of most people. You would not believe the stuff in these bars! Chemicals....lot's of chemicals.
You do not need this! Your skin is being damaged from these chemicals, and who knows what other negative effects it may have on you and your skin! Why? Money. They produce thousands of products for next to nothing by using chemicals and animal fats. (remember, they also remove the glycerine) They know everybody uses/needs soap and you are mostly paying for the packaging the bar comes in and the advertising they must do.
The FDA does not require "soap manufacturers" to label soap (bar) products. Most people don't even wonder what soap is made of therefore are clueless to what they are bathing their skin with. The rest of us do know that originally, soap was/is made with lye (a corrosive alkaline substance) and that it was a long and difficult chore. Even further back in history, soap makers used "Tallow" to produce soap (cow or sheep fat).
Lye was locally made from various and sundry caustic ingredients, including fowl droppings, human urine, wood ash, and powdered limestone, mixed down with rainwater to desired strength. Lye was used to bleach, to soften, and to scour, and to dissolve unwanted bits of adhering materials (flesh or fat from hides during tanning, for instance).
Owner's Note:
We now live in a chemical society that sells us products that are harsh and even dangerous. These toxic chemicals enter our body through touching (our skin absorbs them), and breathing (we inhale the fumes). Because the government does not regulate the safety of the products we buy, we are not protected. These products include: laundry detergents, automatic dish washing detergent, dish washing liquid, all spray products (especially oven cleaners and hair sprays), cleaning products, hair products, cosmetics, and the list goes on!
Long term and over exposure to these chemicals cause a range of health problems such as cancer, respiratory problems, skin problems, allergies, weakens our immune system, and there is research being done now on the relation of chemicals with ADD and ADHD.
There are alternatives you can use to clean your home with that are safe, non-toxic, and biodegradable to protect our water ways. This is the time to act! Get out of the "chemical rut" we have been driven to by the convenience of grocery brand products.
We hope you agree and join us in this healthier way to live.
